is a promising practice intervention, training cosmetologists and salon staff to deliver health education messages to their female clientele specific to women’s cancers.
The program has been modified from work done in Washington, New York, and by the TN Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening program. Training sessions for the cosmetologists include presentations from healthcare professionals about breast, cervical, and colorectal cancers and also include interactive activities that teach how to approach the subject of women’s health – being aware of their own bodies as well as where, when, and how to get screened – with their clients.
Cosmetologists are also educated on local resources available to women, particularly those who are uninsured or are in need. Department of Health Breast & Cervical Cancer Program staff, along with local clinics (including FQHCs) and physicians’ offices participate at programs and assist with local resource information. Pre and Post evaluations are collected from both cosmetologists and clients. Clients are also contacted after 90 days to detmine any action taken as a result of the intervention.
