TN Tobacco Tax Increase ~ Bipartisan Support

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 26, 2016)— Tennessee last raised its tobacco tax in 2007, and has one of the lowest cig and coinstobacco tax rates in the nation — nearly a dollar below the national average. The state’s smoking rate is also 34% higher than the national average (TN rate is 23%, US rate is 15%). In past years, some state legislators have introduced legislation to increase the tobacco tax, although it’s failed to gain traction.
